I've never been surprised, disappointed, or frightened! Great quality work by mechanics that not only know cars but seem to care about the quality of their work. They know bone-stock cars and understand tuner mentality as well. Most of the cars they work on are Audi, BMW, Merc and Porsche. I've seen Alfa's ('cause I LOOK for Alfa's), Triumph, Subaru, etc..

Great alignments with knowledge of lowered cars, able to mount 18" wheels without touching the wheel, accept drop-shipped tires, get parts overnighted when necessary, and there is a nearby Enterprise.

RE: Good BMW mechanic in Rochester, NY area

Stay the hell away from Macs II.

RE: Good BMW mechanic in Rochester, NY area

I can vouch for Fountain, I drove KONI with them in 07, and have a great personal relationship with the new owner of the business. I have not forgotten that I'm hedging a super-fun to bomb around town in for some really quirky mechanical probs. I have two questions:

1. Does Ekstens have the equipment to reset those [annoying] service lights?

2. Does anyone know their labor rates? I can assume they're better than the authorized dealerships.

Glad to be driving a BMW again,

- The new guy

RE: Good BMW mechanic in Rochester, NY area

I have had good experiences with Scott Parks at CDI in Victor. I had Macs install 4 new tires on my wife’s Volvo V70 at 40k miles when they made me aware that 3 of the 4 wheels were damaged and claimed that these very expensive and well maintained wheels were improperly cast at the factory or someone scraped the wheels against a curb. I asked them to show me the damage and once outside they were unable to find any damage on any of the 4 wheels. They then said that the damage was on the inside of each wheel and they refused to guarantee their work. I pointed out that they just claimed that someone had damaged the wheels against a curb which would be impossible to damage on the inside. The conversation became ridiculous, when I challenged the cashiers opinion one of the mechanics got in my face and threatened to take me outside to settle the conversation. At that point the owner stepped in and apologized for his employees’ poor behavior and begged me to reconsider continuing to do business at Macs. He offered to refund my money however I refused to accept, paid the bill, and told him I’d not be back.

RE: Good BMW mechanic in Rochester, NY area

Fountain Motorsports is at 1744 Route 104 Ontario, New York 14519. But since it involved brakes, after paying for 1 hr brake diagnostics, hearing "all is fine" and finding out a month later that the inner pads were shot to the metal (and having to pay for new rotors), I wouldn't go there again.
OTOH, i've heard nothing but good thing about Eksten and Phoenix.

RE: Good BMW mechanic in Rochester, NY area

Universal Imports is in East Rochester, on Linden Ave., which runs from Rte 441 to Whitney/5 mile line Rd. It would be on your left, turning right, from rte 441, maybe half a mile or so. John Holtz has a fellow named Ludwig, who worked at Mt. Read BMW with another German mechanic nemed Heinz, some 25 years ago, when Mt. Read BMW used to have "tech. sessions"., on a Saturday every now and then. I had an Atlantik blue '74 2002 back then and went to Mt. Read frequently. I've been to Eksten's on a few occasions and was pleased with them.
Tim

1969 Neue Klasse BMW 2000 (you got it, the vintage boxy 4 door!!)

RE: Good BMW mechanic in Rochester, NY area

Thanks for all the info. I was bringing my car to the dealer here, (john holtz), for regular maintenance and any issues/problems, but the quality of work done there was very poor. Any recommendations would really be appreciated.

Thanks,

-p
