Hello,

I was wondering if anyone can recommend any good BMW mechanics/garages in the Rochester, NY area. I was bringing my car to the dealer here, (john holtz), for regular maintenance and any issues/problems, but the quality of work done there was very poor. Any recommendations would really be appreciated.

Thanks,

Everyone has their own favorite shop.  Mine is Ekstens.  They are off Dewey, up in Greece.  621-8200

Hello p60151,
Here's two:

Ekstens Autoworks
78 Bennington Drive
Rochester, New York 14616
(585) 621-8200
Ekstens owner Larry Eksten (owner) is very knowledgeable in Foreign and Domestic automobiles. (He was a crew member winning IMSA team in the late 1980's.)

Macs ll
3301 Brighton Henrietta Town Line Rd
Rochester, NY 14623
(585) 272-7700
http://www.macs2.com/
I've had simple mechanical work done at Macs, tires mounted and some body work. One of the owners is a fellow track enthusiast.

Hope that helps,
Cheeers,

Thanks for all the info. I had heard about Eksten's frrom someone at work too. Anyone had any experience with Universal Imports, in Perington I think, or Performance Auto in Webster?

Anyone know if having certified BMW mechanics at a garage is a good thing to have? I guess john holtz has them but that was no guarantee of a good shop.

Thanks again,

-p

Universal Imports is in East Rochester, on Linden Ave., which runs from Rte 441 to Whitney/5 mile line Rd. It would be on your left, turning right, from rte 441, maybe half a mile or so. John Holtz has a fellow named Ludwig, who worked at Mt. Read BMW with another German mechanic nemed Heinz, some 25 years ago, when Mt. Read BMW used to have "tech. sessions"., on a Saturday every now and then. I had an Atlantik blue '74 2002 back then and went to Mt. Read frequently. I've been to Eksten's on a few occasions and was pleased with them.

I've had one bad experience at MacsII, perhaps it is not representative.  But since it involved brakes, after paying for 1 hr brake diagnostics, hearing "all is fine" and finding out a month later that the inner pads were shot to the metal (and having to pay for new rotors), I wouldn't go there again.

OTOH, i've heard nothing but good thing about Eksten and Phoenix.

Another vote for Ekstens. Honest work, very knowledgeable, and they support our chapter. How can you go wrong?

Fountain Motorsports is at 1744 Route 104 Ontario, New York 14519. (585) 857-3096.

www.fountainmotorsports.com

While they have been racing E46 330is in GrandAm Cup / Koni Challenge for the last 3 years, they recently have changed ownership and begun to offer general repair along with their tuning / dyno / and race prep services. The new owner, Jeff Bock has an admirable level of integrity in his approach to repairs and people.

Ekstens is the place to go; I have also had a bad experience with Macs.  I had Macs install 4 new tires on my wife’s Volvo V70 at 40k miles when they made me aware that 3 of the 4 wheels were damaged and claimed that these very expensive and well maintained wheels were improperly cast at the factory or someone scraped the wheels against a curb.  I asked them to show me the damage and once outside they were unable to find any damage on any of the 4 wheels.   They then said that the damage was on the inside of each wheel and they refused to guarantee their work.  I pointed out that they just claimed that someone had damaged the wheels against a curb which would be impossible to damage on the inside.  The conversation became ridiculous, when I challenged the cashiers opinion one of the mechanics got in my face and threatened to take me outside to settle the conversation.  At that point the owner stepped in and apologized for his employees’ poor behavior and begged me to reconsider continuing to do business at Macs.  He offered to refund my money however I refused to accept, paid the bill, and told him I’d not be back.
